In southern Africa, HIV prevalence levels are exceptionally high.
In Zimbabwe, where 1.7 million people are living with HIV, data has shown a decline in HIV prevalence, which is currently estimated at 20.1%, down from 22.1% in 2003. This decline is two-fold--studies have shown both a substantial increase in condom use since the early 1990’s,and that more young people have been delaying their sexual debut,
as well as reducing the number of casual sexual partners. However, a significant factor in the decline is attributed to high mortality rates.
